Let Us Help With Your Preparations
Parsels Funeral Home has the experience and insight to help you, your family, and friends arrange a loving funeral service for your loved one. It is essential to emotionally, physically, and mentally prepare for the occasion. The death of a loved one is among the most stressful experiences we will ever endure. Below are some suggestions that we believe you will find valuable.
Maintain a State of “Mindful Awareness”
Nurture Your Body As Best You Can
Physical symptoms such as fatigue, body aches, loss or change of appetite, shortness of breath, and more are all common when experiencing grief. It’s difficult to know exactly what to do when faced with the onslaught of these symptoms. Practicing mindfulness and being aware of these physical symptoms is the first step. We also recommend:
- Staying hydrated.
- Eating regularly: small snacks and meals are typically easier than large ones.
- Rest regularly: don’t hesitate to take short naps throughout the day as long nights may be difficult.
- Move your body.
Nurture your senses: listen to music or sounds of nature. - Engage in prayer or meditation: tap into or get reacquainted with your spiritual side.
- Reduce your list of necessary activities and chores: now is the time to delegate these tasks to others so that you can devote your time to self-care.
Reach Out to Your Support Network
Neighbors, friends, and family members can be your lifeline right now—and some of them may even be coming to you right now to see how they can help. Don’t turn them away; instead, allow them to give the gift of service. We also recommend reaching out to clergy, your family physician, therapist, or a grief counselor for professional support as they understand your grief and can offer guidance.

The Visitation
Often referred to as viewing or wake, this is a time when guests come to support the family and, more importantly, pay their respects to the deceased. A visitation can occur at any time before the funeral service. Guests pay their respects to the deceased by viewing their casketed body and spending time with the grieving family.

Funeral & Burial Services FAQ
What does it cost to bury a person in a cemetery?
First is the purchase price of the “right to use” the burial plot (unlike a real estate purchase, where you buy the land and all the structures on it; here, you are only purchasing what is called the “interment rights” to the land). In addition, there are fees for the “opening” and “closing” of the gravesite; and any fees required to obtain the necessary permits and maintain cemetery files and records. In addition, there’s the fee for the use of any special equipment (such as a casket-lowering device) as well as the costs for any other services or items purchased. There’s also the headstone or grave marker installation fee and a one-time “perpetual care” (sometimes called “endowment care”) fee paid to ensure your loved one’s burial site is well-maintained.
Does my loved one have to be embalmed before burial?
This is a question we hear a lot. Many funeral homes suggest (and may even go so far as to require) embalming if you’re planning a viewing or visitation. That’s because they want the experience to be as good as it can be for those in attendance, and proper embalming can ensure the deceased looks as good as possible. But as a general rule, embalming is not necessary or legally required if the body is cared for in a relatively short amount of time. Please contact us for specific state or local requirements.
How much does a casket cost?
According to the Federal Trade Commission, an average casket costs around $2,000. Your funeral director can advise you on a casket that will fit your budget.
What is a burial vault, and do I need to buy one?
A burial vault is a concrete vault that offers protection to the casket from the elements of the earth and protects the earth above the burial site from collapse. Not all cemeteries require a burial vault. Contact us if you’re unsure whether or not your desired cemetery requires one.
What is involved in a cemetery burial?
First, the location of the cemetery is chosen. The location will either be chosen by the deceased prior to passing or by you, if they did not choose. Then you will choose a suitable casket and burial vault if applicable. The next step would be to bring us the clothes and any ‘special items’ you wish the deceased to be buried with. You will pick a day and time for the burial once payment is made. Finally, cemetery groundskeepers will finish the process with the “opening” and “closing” of the grave, ensuring proper placement of the casket in the burial vault.
Do I have to purchase a headstone or grave marker?
A grave identifier will be placed on the burial site as a temporary marker until a headstone or grave marker is placed. Headstones and grave markers are not required but due to the temporary nature of a grave identification marker, it may become illegible or if it is somehow removed, the grave may appear “unmarked”.
Where would I purchase a headstone or grave marker?
We can refer you to a trusted monument company when you are ready to place an order. The monument company will provide you with selections of granite headstones or bronze grave markers and go through the selection, manufacture, and placement process with you.
What is a direct burial?
A direct burial is exactly what it sounds like. The direct burial process does not include a funeral, memorial service, or celebration of life. The body will be transported to us for embalming (if you desire), dressing, and casketing. We then transport the body to the cemetery to be buried immediately.
How do I know if I should choose direct burial?
If you’re unsure, speak with your funeral director who may be able to help guide you depending on your unique situation. Direct burial works when there are few mourners or if the deceased preferred a simple burial procedure.
What services are included with direct burial?
Your funeral director will do the following:
- Complete and file a death certificate
- Obtain signatures on any required permits or authorizations
- Assist you in selecting a cemetery, casket, and burial vault.
- Oversee the physical care of the deceased: Dressing, casketing, and escorting to the cemetery for immediate burial.
- Be present at the burial and provide you with copies of all pertinent papers for safekeeping.
What is a graveside service?
A graveside service is performed by a clergy or celebrant at the gravesite as an alternative to a funeral in a church or funeral home chapel.
What kind of “extra” fees or charges will I be required to pay?
At your arrangement conference, your funeral director will discuss fees from outside vendors. Some of these charges may include:
- Fee charged by a newspaper to print an obituary
- Clergy fee
- Musician fee
- Floral arrangements
- Reception catering
- Facility rental
When do I pay for a funeral service?
You should expect to pay at the time the service contract is signed, usually at the arrangement conference or soon afterward.
Who will write the obituary?
You and your family are welcome to write the obituary if you so choose, however they are not necessary! An obituary is one of the most common ways to inform others of your loved one’s passing and can detail when a service is taking place. If you need aid in creating an obituary, please contact us.
