Our History
For more than a century, Parsels Funeral Home has been compassionately servicing the Atlantic County Community. Our first Parsels Funeral Home location was in Pleasantville, NJ, and operated until 1982. In 1960, we opened our Absecon, NJ, location. Except for a brief period, our funeral home has been family-owned and operated, and the Matis family currently runs the business.

Jack Lowenstein, a former owner, spent several decades serving the community as the local funeral director. In the late 1980s, Lowenstein sold the funeral home to a small New Jersey corporation. Later, a large, national corporation took over Parsels Funeral Home in the late 1990s. It remained corporately owned until 2005, when H. Laurence Scott III and his wife, Susan, bought the home from the corporation, bringing it back to its family-owned and operated roots.
‘Larry’ and Sue Scott have been involved with the home since 1989, taking ownership of Parsels Funeral Home in 2005. When Larry took over the management and day-to-day operations, he worked alongside Jack until his retirement in the early 2000s. In August 2010, Larry and Sue Scott retired and proudly sold the home to their daughter and son-in-law, Heather L. and Steven Matis. The Matis family are the current owners and operators of Parsels Funeral Home.
Throughout the business’ storied history, we have been an integral part of the Absecon, NJ, and Atlantic County communities. We strive to support and participate in community events when possible. Heather and Steven Matis are proud to continue the Parsels Funeral Home tradition of providing funeral services with dignity and respect to our local community for years to come.

Heather L. Matis
Office Manager
I grew up in the funeral business as my father, Larry Scott, was a long-time funeral director and previous owner at Parsels Funeral Home. I started my work with Parsels in 1998, handling the administrative duties. In 2001, I transferred to a position within the company which owned Parsels at the time. My new position led me to be in charge of accounts receivable for all New Jersey funeral homes owned by the company and I handled numerous special projects, primarily in New Jersey and New York. I left the funeral industry in 2004 and began working in the financial sector, again in administrative positions and eventually earning positions as assistant to financial advisors. I worked in the financial industry until 2012, when I joined Steven, my husband, working in the day-to-day operations of Parsels Funeral Home. I enjoy working with families in a supportive role, assisting them in making each funeral a personalized and lasting memory for each family we serve.
In my free time, I am involved with community groups that provide information to the public about senior living and the resources available to our community as a whole. I also enjoy volunteering at my daughter’s school, Assumption Regional Catholic School, on several fund-raising projects. I spend numerous hours with my daughter, Alexandra, as she competes on a local dance team. This includes being present for dance practices and competitions, fund-raising, costume preparation, and supporting all the dancers on Alexandra’s team.
Heather is not a licensed funeral director and is not qualified to make arrangements, embalm or conduct funerals.
