Andrew M. Haines

Andrew Magnus Haines, 89, of Absecon, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Absecon Manor. Born in Skudeneshavn, Norway, he came to the United States in 1927, settling in Atlantic City. He grew up there and lived there many years until he moved to Margate in 1957. He remained in Margate until moving to Absecon in 1994. He was a veteran of the US Coast Guard, serving during

WW II. In his youth, he attended engineering and mechanic school, until he joined his father as a commercial fisherman. He continued as a self-employed, fisherman, operating and captaining his boat North Star, in the inlet section of Atlantic City. He put the first Caterpillar Engine in his boat, while operating it. After 30 years in the industry, he retired in 1975. He was a long time member of Absecon VFW Post #9462. Mr. Haines always had a love for golf, wanting to become a pro-golfer in his youth. However, in his later years, he met Stan Dudas, a pro-golfer and rekindled his desire to golf, spending 25 years participating in amputee golf tournaments. He also had the opportunity to travel extensively, participating in these tournaments.

He is predeceased by his wife, Joan C. Haines and his son, William Toland. He is survived by his daughter and son, Charlotte Rankin and Andrew M. Haines; 9 grandchildren, 19 Great-Grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. He will be missed by his friends and family for his loyalty and generosity.
