Charles Waniak, 84, of Absecon, passed away November 16, 2013, after a lengthy battle with dementia. Born in Chelsea, MA, he was a resident of Absecon for 49 years. He retired from the Tech Center (NAFEC) as a computer systems analyst. Before moving to New Jersey, he was employed by MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, MA. There he worked with the National Defense Sage System. At the tech center, he was a key person in implementing the ARTS Program (Automatic Radar Terminal System). Charley was on the original building committee for the Tech center and provided much input for the computer lab. He was a veteran of the army serving during the Korean War. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Mays Landing Country Club for many years. Charley also loved to play pool and was affectionately known to many at the American Legion as Absecon Fats. He was a founding member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish and loved his church. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Florence; his sons, Stephen (Maryann) and James (Susan); his grandchildren, Stephen, Sarah, Annarose, Carlye and Christopher; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Jean Francis, of Reading, MA.
Visitation will be 6PM to 8PM, Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Parsels Funeral Home, 324 New Jersey Ave, Absecon. Visitation will also be 9:45AM to 10:45AM Wednesday, November 20, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 591 New Jersey Ave., Absecon. A funeral mass will be offered immediately after the visitation, at 11AM. Burial will follow at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105. Online condolences may be placed at www.parselsfh.com.
