Donald E. Camp, Absecon City Councilman and professional photographer, died suddenly on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at the age of 78. He was born at home to Frances and Eugene Camp of Linwood on January 23, 1938. He is predeceased by the love of his life, Beverly (Norton), with whom he was married for 57 years. They were residents of Absecon for over 50 years. He is also predeceased by his four siblings: Marie Carty, Helen Talley, Eugene Camp, and Elizabeth Scott.
He will be sadly missed by his three daughters: Diane (Peter) Stein of Winterville, NC; Lorraine (Peter) Dearth of Limerick, PA; and Bethanne Rocco of Absecon as well as his six grandchildren: Daniel, Kimberly and Sarah Stein; Kevin and Connor Dearth; and Gabrielle Rocco as well as many nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren. He will also be missed by his loyal companion, Jenny.
Donald grew up in Pleasantville and attended Pleasantville High School. He was an apprentice mechanic at City Motors in Atlantic City before starting his own truck leasing company and opening Camp’s Garage in Pleasantville. Before retiring in 1984, he had been an equipment mechanic for 16 years with the City of Absecon.
Donald served in the Army National Guard and Army Reserves. His hobbies included hunting and fishing. He cared deeply about his family and friends, his community, and helping others. He was a member of numerous organizations including the Absecon Lion’s Club, the Delaware Valley Eye Bank, the Professional Photographer’s Association of NJ, the Absecon Republican Club, the Absecon United Methodist Church, and Atlantic County Emergency Management. He enjoyed attending the Indianapolis 500 every year for over 10 years and loved to travel around the United States as well as to far off places such as Ireland, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala. His most recent adventure was exploring and photographing caves in Utah.
Visitation will be 10AM to 12PM Saturday, February 6, 2016 at The United Methodist Church at Absecon, 100 Pitney Rd., in Absecon. A service will follow at 12PM. The graveside service will take place at Zion Cemetery, Egg Harbor Twp. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to The Methodist Church at Absecon, at the mentioned address.
