George S. Austin

George S. Austin, 88, of Absecon, passed peacefully on May 17, 2021, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. He was born June 27, 1932 in Somers Point, NJ. He was the son of the late George S. Austin, Sr. and Harriet W. Austin. He grew up in Ventnor, NJ and graduated from Atlantic City High School, class of 1950. George enjoyed fishing, bowling, having rolled a 300 game, reading and watching Philly sports. Pop Pop enjoyed watching his grands play their sports. He never missed a game or a dance recital. George was one of the founding members of ASAC Youth Sports. He enjoyed coaching basketball, baseball and soccer. He also had the opportunity to travel extensively with his wife in the US and abroad.

He met his wife of 66 years, Amanda, playing basketball. George started working for Atlantic City Electric after graduation and then was drafted in to the US Army. After discharge, he and Amanda were married in 1955. He worked for AC Electric at the BL England Plant where he was control room operator, shift supervisor and training coordinator. He retired after 40 years. George (Shooter) and Amanda (T) raised 3 children in Absecon, Kevin (Patty) Austin, Debi (Pete) Higbee and Craig (Kathie) Austin; they have 5 grandchildren, Katie and Bryan Higbee, Amanda (Rob) McLachlan, Melissa (Sam) Wright and Danielle Hollis and Fiancé, Allan. He has 3 great-grandchildren, Colin, Abigail and Moxley. Survivors also include his sister, Ann Keeler; his sister-in-law, Ginnie Atkinson; and brother-in-law, Bob (Sally) Atkinson.

A private burial will take place for George.
