Grace Theresa Gerety, of Egg Harbor Twp., entered heaven’s gates where her beloved 3 brothers, George, Joseph and John “Jack” Gerety were waiting for her, along with her father and mother, Joseph and Marie (McGill) Gerety.
Grace was born on December 15, 1921 and went home to our heavenly father on March 10, 2017. She was born at home in Philadelphia and lived there during her first few years of life until relocating to Somers Point, New Jersey, with her family. As a young adult she began working in her father’s butcher shop, Gerety’s Market, and then went on to work for her youngest brother Jack who took over the family business after their father’s passing.
During her retirement years, Grace relocated with her youngest brother Jack to Spring Hill, Florida, where together they raised Jack’s youngest child, Michael “Mike” Theodore Gerety. Mike was like a son to Grace and she doted on him as if he were her very own.
Grace was an avid sports fan and she really held her own up against her 3 brothers. She was in her own right a living and breathing sports almanac who could spout off who won the World Series in 1940 and then recall in the same breath who the MVP was during the 1984 Super Bowl Championship.
Her love of sports was not only mental but physical as well. One family member recalls Grace catching fly balls from her nephews bare handed in her 50s. She never appeared to act her age physically, and right up until just hours before her death, her mind was always as sharp as a tack.
Never marrying, as she lost the love of her life during World War II, she never had any biological children of her own, but she had countless nieces and nephews who she loved all so very dearly. Anytime any of her nieces or nephews were in her company, whether they were her great, great -great or great- great-great, they always felt unique and special. She was like a second mother to so many of her nieces and nephews and made every one of them feel like her very own.
She was a deeply religious lady and the family is at peace knowing that their matriarch is now with the heavenly father. Her services will be private with Parsels Funeral Home, Absecon. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.parselsfh.com.
