Joseph C. Walaconis, 82, of Absecon, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2013, at his home. Born in Shenandoah, Pa, he was a resident of Absecon for 45 years. Mr. Walaconis was a veteran of the US Army, serving in the Korean War. He worked as an FAA Safety Engineer for NAFEC in Egg Harbor Twp. for 40 years, retiring in 1991. Two of the most important tests he performed were testing on runways and tests for wind sheer. His constant goal was to make air travel safer for everyone. He was the recipient of numerous awards by the federal government for his air traffic safety testing. His hobbies included boating but he mostly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Dolores A. (nee Zuber) Walaconis; his children, Cynthia (Frank) Jeanette of Woolwich Twp. and Joseph Walaconis, Jr., of Absecon; his grandchildren, Alexandria Jeanette, Frank Jeanette, III, Joseph Walaconis, III, Jennifer Walaconis and Karra Walaconis; and his great-grandson, Joseph Robert. Visitation will be Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 9AM to 10:45AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 591 New Jersey Ave., Absecon. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11AM. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
