Zona, Joseph Eugene, 100, of Absecon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 17, 2022 at home. Joe was born on July 1, 1921 to Joseph and Millie (Cocozza) Zona in Pleasantville. Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Evelyne (Carmen). Joe was the oldest of five siblings and is predeceased by sisters, Marie Giordano and Leanore DiFelice. He’s survived by brothers, Albert and Henry, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
After graduating from Pleasantville High School, Joe served in the US Air Force for 4 years during World War II. Following his military service, Joe owned and operated service stations in Pleasantville for over 40 years, retiring in 1990. Joe was also a volunteer fireman in Pleasantville for many years.
As a younger man, Joe earned a pilot’s license and enjoyed flying his small plane out of Bader Field in Atlantic City. Also, Joe was a certified trainer of German Shepherds, and conducted classes that led many dogs to become police and service animals. Later in life, Joe became an active ham radio operator, speaking with people on every continent and over 100 countries.
Anyone who knew Joe could always count on his smile, witty comments, and his genuine interest in everyone he met. He will be remembered, and missed, by many.
Visitation will be 10AM to 11AM on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at Parsels Funeral Home, 324 New Jersey Ave., Absecon. A service will follow at 11AM.
