Obituary For Reverend Monsignor Michael J. Coyne

Coyne, Reverend Monsignor Michael J., 94, of Pleasantville, entered into God’s loving, eternal embrace on December 31, 2024, at Villa Raffaella. Born June 3, 1930 in County Mayo, Ireland, he was one of nine children. He was ordained at St. John’s Seminary in Waterford, Ireland, for the Diocese of Camden on June 19, 1955. He served in various pastoral ministries for 66 years, including hospital chaplain at Our Lady of Lourdes in Camden and pastor of St. Ann parish, Elmer; St. Rose of Lima parish, Newfield and St. Nicholas parish, Egg Harbor City. He also served as administrator of St. Thomas The Apostle parish, Brigantine. In 1975, he was appointed founding pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish, Absecon, where he ministered for 27 years. After retiring he continued to assist on weekends at the parish of St. Monica, Atlantic City.

Monsignor Coyne loved his priestly vocation and mission, which he embraced and lived fully and enthusiastically. He was known for his commitment to his parishioners. He often said that his primary job description was to get to know the people by name, to visit them and to be present to those who were sick and hospitalized or in need. He often walked or biked around the parish to meet them personally. He encouraged the involvement of parishioners in numerous parish activities and committees. Monsignor was friendly, funny, generous and gracious – a wonderful priest, pastor and friend to many. He also loved golf, Philadelphia sports teams and the ‘Fighting Irish’ of Notre Dame.

Monsignor Coyne was predeceased by his parents, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by his youngest sister, Christine Coyne of Ireland and many nieces and nephews.

A viewing, beginning with the Rite of Reception of the Body, will be held on Tuesday, January 7. 2025 from 5 PM to 8 PM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish, 591 New Jersey Ave., Absecon. An additional viewing will be held at the parish on Wednesday morning from 9:00 AM -10:45 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing. For online condolences, please visit www.parselsfh.com.

Monsignor Michael Coin was a healing source and very special for our family when my grandparents passed away

Deepest sympathy and condolences to Monsignor Coyne's family and friends. I was very fortunate and blessed to have met one of the kindest gentleman I've known during his stay at Villa Raffaella Assisted Living. As a nurse at Villa Raffaella, I would exchange morning greetings with him. "How are you, Monsignor?" And his reply was always "I'm on top of the world." During his last weeks, as his body became weaker, he kept his calm in prayer and faith waiting for the Lord to call him home. It was his wish not to be resuscitated . He said: " When I get there, I will pray for you." Monsignor Coyne, farewell! Thank you for your love, kindness, gentleness, prayers, and humor. You've touched so many lives. We lost a friend but gained an angel! You are No.1! Now, you really are on top of the world! Pam Rico

We were very lucky to have met the Monsignor when my Mother and my wife's father became residents at Villa Rafaella. From day one, his Irish wit, humor and compassion were his constant companions. He went out of his way to make sure our parents were comfortable and welcome in their new surroundings. When my mother was placed on hospice he made sure she received communion when she couldn't attend Mass. He performed the Anointing of the Sick but only after all of our family members were able to attend. He didn't get to say goodbye to Laurence due to his sudden illness but I know they're having a reunion with the Lord and all of their friends and relatives in Heaven. Rest in Peace Monsignor; nobody deserves it more than you. The Albright / Sullivan Families.

Rest in eternal peace Father Michael. A fantastic great uncle who will be remembered lovingly x

I will always remember Monsignor Coyne as "The First Priest". The first priest who speaks to the congregation not from the pulpit but in front of the people. Does not read the homily but speaks the homily. The first priest whose hand shakes after mass has meaning and somehow gives me comfort. The first priest my kids have ever known. And the first priest who brought me back to church. And the first priest I will truly truly miss.

Monsignor Coyne was a friend of mine since I first met him in 1985 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Church. Attending his mass was life changing, for myself anyway. Over the next 40 years Monsignor and I became rather close inside and out of church. On the boardwalk as well as having dinner together at my house. Over 15 years ago Monsignor Coyne asked me to lector for the Mass at Our Lady Star of the Sea as I still do today. He so influenced my spiritual being and for that reason I am a better person today. God rest your soul my friend. Always leaving his mass with a smile...

Monsignor Coyne was the greatest priest I've ever known. He was always so kind and generous to our family when he was at St. Nicks. He used to get all of us tickets to the Ice Capades for Christmas as well as tickets to Holy Spirit HS turkey bowl. He was my mom's favorite priest. Rest in peace, Monsignor. Say hi to my mom and dad in heaven.

Monsignor Coyne was by far the BEST priest I've ever known! He was so good to our family when he was pastor at St. Nicholas in EHC back in the 1970's! May he rest forever in the arms of Jesus! 🙏

You’ll be able to invite others to visit the online memorial, where they can upload images, share stories, write heart-felt messages of condolence, send a floral tribute to the funeral, or make a charitable donation in memory of your loved one. And the built-in social media integration means they can then “spread the word” about their addition to your loved one’s Book of Memories™ using Facebook and Twitter.
