Ruth Coulter

Coulter, Ruth (85), of Margate, died on April 17 at Seashore Gardens in Galloway Township. Ruth was born on November 30, 1926 to the late Harry and Hettie (Politizer) Coulter. She is predeceased by her sisters, Eleanor “Tessie” and Bernice Coulter. Ruth graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1944, and helped run the family’s rooming house in Atlantic City. She also worked at Roth’s Candy Store on the Boardwalk. Recognizing that Ruth was a person who loved children, her sister Bernice, who was an elementary school principal, convinced her to go to college to become a teacher. She attended Glassboro State College, graduating in 1974. She liked to brag that she graduated and started teaching at 48 years old. She went on to receive her master’s degree from Villanova University. In Atlantic City, she taught at the Pennsylvania Avenue School, and mainly at the Brighton Avenue School until her retirement in 1994. Ruth loved going to the theater, and carried that enjoyment over to her classroom, where she and colleague Joyce Nelson produced yearly musicals with their second graders that delighted the entire school. Ruth also enjoyed traveling, needlepoint, cooking (she brought her famous brownies, and nuts and bolts to many people), dining out, especially at her favorite restaurant, the Crab Trap, where she threw herself a yearly birthday party for her many friends. Ruth belonged to the following organizations: American Association of University Women, Soroptomists, Atlantic City Education Association, New Jersey Education Association, National Education Association, and the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority.

Surviving are her godson, Rick Williams, his wife Sandy and their family, friends, colleagues, and all the children she taught whose lives she touched.

Ruth was a kind and gentle soul who reached out to so many people and made such a positive difference in their lives.

Donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to the ‘Save Lucy Committee’, 9200 Atlantic Ave, Margate, NJ 08402, an organization she loved.
