Walter Richard Schaefer

Walter Richard Schaefer, BMC USN, retired, of Egg Harbor Township, was called by the supreme commander February 28, 2012, to be assigned as needed. Chief Schaefer was born January 2, 1922 in Middletown, CT and schooled in Meriden, Ct. He joined the United States Navy on January 10, 1940 and served on various ships and stations, including the USS Arizona, USS North Carolina, USS Leedstown, USS PC 572, USS Adirondack, USS Great Sitkin, USS English, USS Strong and the USS De Long. He was a member of FRA BR 13, Atlantic City, American Legion Post #430, Galloway and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2389, Egg Harbor Township.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Helen Schaefer; his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Lynn and James Plumley; his grandchildren, Carl Schaefer, Jr., Cathy Noe, Michael Schaefer, James Plumley, III, and Kyle Plumley; and his great-grandson, Geofrey Schaefer.

Visitation will be 9AM to 11AM Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Parsels Funeral Home, 324 New Jersey Ave., Absecon. Burial will follow at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor.
