William Southrey (Bill), 81, of Absecon, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Born in Edgely, Bristol Twp., PA., Bill moved to Atlantic City at age 11, settling in Absecon 58 years ago. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. Bill worked for 30 years as a commercial fisherman, owning his own boat and operating out of Atlantic City’s inlet. He then worked for 17 years with Atlantic City Electric, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Absecon VFW, Post #9462 and the Absecon American Legion, Post #28. He was a long time member of the United Methodist Church at Absecon. Bill enjoyed fishing and golfing but loved the time spent with family, especially his grandchildren who lovingly called him “Poppy”.
Bill is predeceased by his parents, William and Helen; his brothers, John and Harry; and his grandson, Kyle. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alma J. Southrey; his children, William (Debra) of Absecon , Brian (Melissa) of Galloway and Amy (Stephen) Quigley of Absecon; his sister, Alma Collins, of Cleveland, OH; his grandchildren, Sarai, Andrew, Caitlin, Brian, Amber, Stephen and Brianna; and his great-granddaughters, Luna and Ava. He also leaves many extended family members, friends and fishing buddies.
Visitation is from 1:30PM to 2:30PM, Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the United Methodist Church at Absecon, 100 Pitney Rd., Absecon. A service will be conducted at 2:30PM. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
