Ash Scattering Services
After a cremation, you must decide what to do with the ash remains of your loved one. The most common options include:
- Keeping the remains at home
- Placing them in a Columbarium at a cemetary
- Scattering in a meaningful place
While you do have options, it’s crucial to follow the rules and regulations set by the state for scattering ashes. Below is a list of common state regulations:
- Obtain written permission from the property owner if you wish to scatter the ashes on private property.
- Obtain a scattering permit if you wish to scatter in a public park
- The Clean Water Act maintains that in order to scatter ashes in inland waters, you must obtain a permit from the agency that oversees waterways.
- The Environmental Protection Agency maintains that you notify the regional office if you wish to scatter at sea (in writing and within 30 days after scattering). You must also maintain a distance of three nautical miles from the coastline
